Born and raised in the United States, Bao Bao, a 3-year-old giant panda, had arrived in China.
So why giant pandas around world have to return to China?
From 1958 to 1982, China gave 23 pandas to nine different countries as gifts to build or enhance diplomatic relationship. This is called pandas diplomacy
By 1984, pandas are not used as diplomatic gifts any longer. But China has offered to lend the giant panda to other country for 10-year period and the country need to pay standard fee of 1,000,000 US dollars per year
And there is a regulation states that any panda baby born during the borrowing shall be considered as asset of People’s Republic of China and have to return to china before 4 years old.
